Eregli G Shipwreck Dive Highlights- 2012 (Remastered!)
We’re looking back at another fond memory from our 15 years of ocean exploration, and today’s highlight takes us to 2012 off the coast of Eregli, Turkey. Our Corps of Exploration revisited and remapped the "Eregli G" shipwreck site in the Black Sea. The team’s wreck site survey revealed several important clues about the ship's identity and history.
No evidence of a steam engine was found, leading archaeologists to believe this was a sailing ship, potentially with fishing gear. After identifying the anchor was Admiralty style, they also determined the ship must have sunk sometime after the 1830s. To further narrow down the ship’s age, archeologist Dan Davis identified the binnacle (aka compass stand) as one with characteristics commonly used between 1901 and 1902.
