Design a Robot Classroom Warm Up
Credit
Ocean Exploration Trust
Classroom Warm-ups: Kick-off any lesson with these one-page, observation-building, problem-solving STEM prompts — whether or not you’re teaching an ocean topic.
Students, imagine you are in charge of designing a robot (ROV) that needs to travel to a depth of 4,000 meters (over 13,000 feet) in the ocean. The ROV does not carry people. Its purpose is to help you understand the seafloor. What kinds of technology & tools would you use to build your ROV and why? Use sketches and/or words to describe your design and be prepared to share your ideas with others!
Teachers, after students have discussed their own designs, compare them to the real ROV Hercules:
