Crafting Your Own Marine Snow Snow Globe
Credit
Ocean Exploration Trust
Students will learn about marine snow and its importance to the marine ecosystem, then create their own snow globe featuring marine creatures and marine snow as the "glitter" falling in the water of the globe. This activity is appropriate for students ages 7 and up, although students younger than 10 may require significant individual assistance with each step. It can be used at a STEAM class/camp, art class/camp, science museum/aquarium/library event, homeschool group, or a girl/boy scouts group.
Objectives & learning outcomes
Depending on if students are in a science or art class, students will:
- Science:
- Students/participants will learn about deep-sea ecosystems and compare and contrast them with other ecosystems
- Students/participants will be able to define marine snow and explain its importance as a food source
- Students/participants will learn about the biology (and potentially geology) of deep-sea habitats.
- Art:
- Students/participants will experiment with different techniques to mold different shapes
- Students/participants will translate a science topic into a visual medium
- Students/participants will mix paints to achieve certain colors and textures to represent nature
