Susana Morales

Tell us about your work / research. What kinds of things do you do?

I am a Biology major with a minor in Environmental Science and I'm interested in Marine Biology and taxonomy of many species in the ocean. I can identify different species of animals from what I've learned and can analyze their physiology within the ocean. I am a student at CSU Channel Islands and I will graduate Spring of 2018. 

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I started off in Biology and explored many options in that field, but I fell in love with animals in general. I am mostly interested in conservation and animals that are protected in marine protected areas. The ocean is another world in my opinion and it almost seems like an underwater space because of all the deep sea animals that live on the seafloor and the different zones of the oceans. Most of the classes that I have taken involve animals, ecology, environmental science, and conservation.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My friends have definitely encouraged me to keep going because general Biology can be a very challenging major. My parents have always supported me in everything that I've done up until today and I have never felt pressured by them.

What element of your work / study do you think is the most fascinating?

Although I don't have my scuba diving certificate yet, I think that it's so fascinating how people dive underwater and expect anything. I feel like it's very calm and quiet when you dive because you're in your own little bubble (no pun intended). 

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I hope to get a Ph.D. in marine Biology one day and conserve animals or our oceans.

What are your degrees and certifications?

I am working on BA in Biology and minor in Environmental Science and Resource Management.

What are your hobbies?

I love to hike and paint.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

If you don't go, you'll never know.
