Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

As of now, I have not engaged in geoscience research but I am looking forward to being introduced to a broad array of geoscience and oceanography activities while I’m on board E/V Nautilus. I am a recent graduate and during my time as an undergraduate, I focused on public health issues and the effect of language barriers within the healthcare system. I engaged in public health research and projects regarding alcohol consumption, city accessibility, stress, movement, language barriers, translation, and interpretation. I am very excited and honored to take part in this program and delve into the world of science communication, as I work with a talented team on this exploratory ocean expedition.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I chose a degree in Community Health and Spanish, and a career in nursing due to my personal experiences, which drove me to want to help those in need. I value the hands-on engagement nurses have with patients because it’ll enable me to directly impact their lives in a positive manner, at times when they often need it most. My interest in nursing was solidified after I gained relevant experience working as a caregiver and Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, as I gained the wonderful experience of protecting and improving lives. Knowing that the work I did benefited and improved the lives of others, and will continue to do so once I’m an established nurse, is what drives my interest in my career.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My high school college advisor was a huge support in helping me figure out my plans post-graduation. She always encouraged me; informing me that I was capable and intelligent enough to accomplish any goal of mine. She was my go-to for questions about college, and without her, I wouldn’t have applied to my alma mater.

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

I am fascinated by the impact language has on the healthcare system in the United States, the interplay between sound and speech, and how language is transmitted culturally. My recent trip to Costa Rica allowed me to delve into my fascination with language more, while I was there to examine the conservation practices of Costa Ricans.

How did you get involved with the Nautilus Exploration Program?

I applied after hearing about the STEMSEAS program from a mentor, Nicole Murray when she supervised my class study abroad trip to Costa Rica. She spoke fondly of the program; I researched the program, found it interesting, and consequently applied.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

My experience working as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, caregiver, and interpreter led me to my current career of being a caretaker and waiting to become a nurse. I also had the opportunity of examining coral reefs on the Caribbean seashore. Apart from this, my opportunities to explore other pathways have been limited due to the coronavirus crisis, so I am ecstatic to take part in this expedition and learn more about oceanography.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Bachelor of Science in Community Health -- University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana 2023
Emergency Medical Technician - Est 2021

What are your hobbies?

I like to do physical activities like yoga, volleyball, rock climbing, and walking. I also like to watch movies and read for my leisure.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Take every chance to solidify your interest in nursing, explore new pathways, and broaden your horizons. It's important to gain relevant experience prior to nursing school, so you can ensure that being a nurse is the right lifestyle for you. Engaging in new opportunities as they’re presented to you will provide you with enriching experiences, ensuring that you’re well-rounded and ready to take on any challenge life throws your way.
