Rebecca Rutstein

A Philadelphia-based artist whose work traverses painting, installation and sculpture, Rebecca Rutstein creates large scale abstractions inspired by geology, mappings and the undercurrents that shape our world. Seeking out geologically dynamic environments, Rutstein has done research and exploration as an artist-in-residence at Gullkistan Residency (Laugarvatn, Iceland), Banff Centre for the Arts (Banff, Canada), Red Cinder Artist Colony (Na’alehu, Hawaii), and Vermont Studio Center (Johnson, Vermont). Rutstein has exhibited extensively throughout the United States in museums, galleries and institutions, and has received numerous grants including a Pew Fellowship in the Arts and an Independence Foundation Fellowship. Her work has been featured in many publications including the Huffington Post, New American Paintings, Philadelphia Magazine, Philadelphia Inquirer, Fresh Paint Magazine and the film “Paranoia”. Rutstein’s work can be found in numerous public collections including Temple University, Johns Hopkins Hospital, and Fox Chase Cancer Center.

Rebecca Rutstein holds a BFA (Magna Cum Laude) from Cornell University (including abroad study in Rome, Italy) and an MFA from University of Pennsylvania, where she received several awards including the Charles Addams Memorial Prize. She has been a visiting artist at many institutions including University of Texas, Temple University/Tyler School of Art, and Swarthmore College, and has taught painting and drawing at University of Pennsylvania.
