Piper Priddy

Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do? 

I am an undergraduate student at the University of Delaware majoring in Marine Science with a concentration in Marine biology and a minor in Insect and Wildlife conservation.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I've always had an interest in marine science, more specifically marine biology. I find the biodiversity all around the ocean incredibly fascinating, from reefs to hydrothermal vents. I have loved all things fish, primarily sharks, and marine biology since I was a small child, and after learning what marine biologists do, I've taken every opportunity to be near the water and learn more about this field. I was able to take a marine science class during my freshman year of high school and it cemented my passion. I'm excited to be able to take a step closer to my career choice and immerse myself in science.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My parents are the ones that encourage my learning and career choice the most. As soon as I started to show an interest in the ocean and marine biology, they were incredibly supportive from taking aquarium tours to buying marine books and shark stuffies. They tell me about the opportunities in my area of interest and even coerced me that the family moving to Maine for my mom's job would be fun because of the sea turtles. They have always backed up my decision in my career path.

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

I find discovering new species of marine animals to be one of the most interesting things to happen. Being able to look at all the discoveries made in recent years, it is evident how little we know about our ocean and I want to be part of unlocking its mysteries.

How did you get involved with the Nautilus Exploration Program?  

I applied to the STEMSEAS program which is in partnership with E/V Nautilus for a 10-day expedition. The program was referred to me by one of my college professors and I am looking forward to the expedition.

What other jobs led you to your current career? 

Due to my fascination with all things shark and fish, I took a marine sciences class at my first opportunity in high school, while not a job, the research and experiences lead to my desire to pursue an education in Marine Biology. I applied early to the University of Delaware Marine Science student, and during my first year at the college declared a concentration in Marine Biology and an Insect and Wildlife Conservation minor.

What are your hobbies?

I love swimming, both competitively and recreationally. On rainy days or late nights, I love reading books and recently, I've been exploring cooking and trying to teach myself more recipes than plain pasta.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

If you want to dive into marine biology look for things in your area that are about or closely related to your field. Ask to volunteer or work at an aquarium or pet store, and see if there are fisheries with opportunities or even camps. It never hurts to ask and it's never too early to start learning. Be open to meeting new people, making connections, and to any opportunities that sound of interest to you. Get your foot in the door so you can experience and discover what interests you.
