Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I specialize in Geographic Information Systems, Remote Sensing, and Sonar Technology. Working with Scientist to better understand research site bathymetry for Geological and Biological exploration/characterization. Using echosounders we can estimate bathymetry, rugosity, slope, aspect, and hardness of the seafloor to direct ROV and research objectives.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I started studying maps at an early age and that passion for trying to understand the world through cartographic representation has allowed me to explore the Sahara for mineral exploration, deep-sea biology, and Sonar mapping.

Who influenced or encouraged you the most?

My Village of professors, experts, and friends that have always been excited to share their knowledge and experiences with me.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

The ability to explore, and characterize previously unknown areas of the deep-sea.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

Working with Dr. Fisher at Penn State University allowed me to enter the world of deep-sea biology, and life as a marine scientist. While with Dr. Fisher, I worked on measuring the impact on deep-sea corals from the Deep Water Horizon oil spill, coral habitats, and the effects of artificial reefs with respect to deep-sea corals.

What are your degrees and certifications?

BS Geography - Penn State 2007
GIS Certificate - Penn State 2012
MPS Geospatial Intelligence - Penn State 2018

What are your hobbies?

Cycling in all forms, Canoe Camping, Hiking, Sailing, Woodworking, and Map Making

What advice would you give to someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Don’t narrowly focus on the requirements for your degree or future job, explore other passions and studies. Be well rounded and knowledgeable about many tangential aspects of what you want to pursue. You’ll find many more opportunities are available to you.

How did you get involved with the Nautilus Exploration Program? How did you get on the ship?

In 2014, I was given the opportunity to intern with Nautilus as a Navigator, the program excited a lot of my skills and passions.
