Mike Bewley is a postgraduate research student with the Australian Centre for Field Robotics in Sydney. The marine robotics group performs numerous sea-floor surveys with an autonomous underwater vehicle (no pilot and no tether!). Mike's main research interest is in using machine learning to automatically interpret the content of the images the robot brings back. This will hopefully save a lot of time and manual labelling effort for marine scientists in the future! Before starting his PhD in 2012, he worked as a systems engineer at Cochlear Ltd. While studying, he also runs a Data Science consulting business.

Mike graduated from the University of Sydney in 2007 with degrees in Electrical Engineering and Science (Physics and Computational Science). After working in industry, he returned to start a PhD in machine learning and robotics in 2012.

"Sailing on the Nautilus is just so many amazing things at once: Cool technology, the stunning natural beauty of the ocean, and a unique sense of exploration. There's nothing quite like spending a shift in the dark control van, surrounded by video feeds and feeling like you're actually with the vehicle miles below the sea floor - only to emerge for a sunset over the water and dinner with a great bunch of people. Wouldn't miss it for the world."

Expeditions

Michael participated in the following Ocean Exploration Trust expeditions:
