Max Luthy

Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

I am a recent graduate from UC Berkeley with a double major in Film and Marine Science. I love science communication and got my start in the field as a volunteer at the Seattle Aquarium. Last Summer I spent my time at the Monterey Bay Aquarium delivering talks on the incredible creatures of California's coast. What I love most about this field is sparking someone's interest in a niche topic, like the asymmetrical tail of a Sturgeon or the cryptic patterns that differentiate California's Rockfish.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I started in science communication because my mom is an environmental educator. Having her come into my class since I was in kindergarten has always been so fun. Her ability to get kids excited about nature through her made-up songs and custom-made programs is something I always thought was so inspiring and impactful. Now I am following in her footsteps, trying to get the next generation to care about our planet in the same way she did for me.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My mother inspired me the most, setting an example of what effective science communication looks like.

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

The most fascinating element of my work right now is making animations in After Effects. Getting a shark swim to look just right is a challenging but rewarding task!

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

I applied for the Video Engineering Internship program after watching Nautilus live streams in high school and finding the format super fascinating. I kept the organization in the back of my mind and waited to apply until I was an undergraduate.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

Of the opportunities I've had in my field, the two that have set me up best for this position have been being a Naturalist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and an intern at the advocacy group Shark Stewards. At the Monterey Bay Aquarium, I delivered programs on the Otters, Penguins, and Aquarium for the thousands of visitors we had over the Summer. At Shark Stewards, I have been working on grants for a water monitoring project at a local Leopard Shark nursery whilst also creating digital animations and graphics for different Shark Stewards films.

What are your hobbies?

I love identifying fish on iNaturalist, watching/making movies, and hiking.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

If you are interested in video engineering, build up your resume not just through positions, but through practical skills! Learn the Adobe suite, and get behind a camera whenever you can.
