Maikani Andres

Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

As a researcher, I conduct surveys that monitor the coral reefs of Palau. In these surveys we look at benthic composition, coral recruits abundance, fish diversity and abundance, and edible macroinvertebrates. This project along with other projects that PICRC is working on will help us understand the overall state of our marine ecosystems which will help improve their management. I only began my career as a researcher recently and hope to expand my knowledge in more ways of conducting marine research.
 

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

Growing up, I was always fascinated by the marine life - the corals, the fish, the inverts, the turtles and everything in between. I always wanted to be in/on the water whether it was swimming, snorkeling, fishing, or just going out there to play. My backyard was literally the ocean. I remember one time while my cousins and I were swimming I said "I wish that I was a fish so I could stay in the water everyday." I still find myself wishing the same thing these days. The ocean around us is so vast and our understanding of it and how we are impacting it is so little. I want to be a part of this big movement to conserve and protect our ocean for the sake of our children.
 

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

The person that has the biggest influence for my choice of career is my father. My dad was a fisherman so he would always take us out fishing or to the rock islands on the weekends. He is the reason why I have such a strong passion for the ocean. The person that encourages me the most and the reason I want to conserve and protect the ocean is my son. I want him to experience our beautiful ocean that has provided and nurtured our people for generations.
 

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

The most fascinating element of my work is seeing our incredibly diverse coral reefs. Yes, I've always known that Palau is extremely biodiverse but seeing it in person always puts me in awe.
 

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

I became a part of this expedition mainly because of my job. I've heard about OET before and have had a couple of friends who have done previous expeditions. I have also always wanted to join one of OET's expeditions so to be able to take part is such an honor.
 

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I've always known that I wanted to pursue a career in marine research; therefore, I got a bachelor's degree in marine science and have now pursued my dream career.

Bachelor of Arts in Marine Science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo (Minor in Communication)
 

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies include reading, swimming, and baking.
 

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

My advice to people who want to pursue a career in marine science is to keep pushing through. School is hard as it is and sometimes life throws curve balls at you, but you have to remember to keep going no matter the circumstance.
