Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I've always loved science and especially the ocean, although I've never got to study it in deeper content. I'm very much involved with curriculum and programs that take place in our schools and island-wide efforts, especially in science and mathematics (STEAM for that matter) for many years. Assisting teachers with professional development, standards and curriculum needs, and many other are key to my role as program director.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I started working as a classroom teacher for science and mathematics before taking up a role as a science specialist, now a program director. I also serve on the Sanctuary Advisory Council for NMSAS, occupying its Education seat for many years now, thus my involvement in Ocean Literacy with its education and outreach efforts. Over the many years of teaching and as a curriculum specialist, I'm always fascinated with new knowledge of science (STEAM), ongoing opportunities to best support teachers and students, and endless vast of knowledge to be shared with the community. American Samoa is home to me and I continue to serve in many capacities to best meet its needs and challenges we face as a remote island territory.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

I would say that the many teachers who were very traditional in their teaching but loved the great outdoors, thus introducing me to the natural world and the great world of science. My high school teachers were most influential in creating science clubs, marine science club, nature walks, field trips, and so forth.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

Because of my direct involvement in the many STEAM special projects (science fair, science symposium, STEP-UP, ROV, Solar Sprint, math competition, etc.), I am always fascinated by the results/displays/presentations that the students bring forth.

How did you get involved with the Ocean Exploration Trust?

I have been a volunteer, liaison, and a member of the Sanctuary Advisory Council (NMSAS) for many years. Numerous projects took place and I have been introduced to the previous expeditions, both Okeanos and Nautilus. As a PD Facilitator, I work closely with Ms. Megan Cook, the Sanctuary and many great folks that introduced me to this expedition. I was also involved in the planning for the American Samoa expedition back in March, which truly prompted my interest to explore. What a better way to talk and share with folks about Ocean literacy when you have first-hand experience?

What other jobs led you to your current career?

I've always been with the Department of Education since I started as a teacher. The many opportunities that I was afforded to through my career kept me where I am today.

What are your hobbies?

Outdoor activities -gardening, volleyball, etc; playing piano and singing; sewing; reading and cooking

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

There are so many opportunities out there that one can explore and whatever suits and interests you, learn all about it. With the everchanging advancements in technology and understanding of the natural world, there is no limit to what one can explore. I only wish I knew all about it before!
