Lottie Haleck

Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

I'm a teacher at one of our local high schools, Samoana High School. Currently, I opted to teach Earth & Space and Physical science this year. I've been in this profession for about 3 years, so fairly new, and still have much to learn. I've worked/helped students with their projects in school based and island wide competitions with successful results. On another note, I'm head of our department; this profession is actively challenging me to grow in leadership skills, communication, resource management, planning, organization and facilitating meetings and competitions.
 

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

When I attended the local community college, my marine science professors, Jameson Newtson and Kelley Tagarino, fueled my passion to pursue a career in Marine Science. I didn't know where it was going to lead me, but I knew it was a degree I wanted to pursue. Along the way, I met many passionate, strong professors like them. Through the years, I learned that the vast majority of the ocean still remained unexplored, but what really kept my interest is the possibility of what we might find in those unexplored regions of the ocean.
 

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My father was involved in ocean conservation programs such as the Western Pacific Fishery Council for American Samoa and brought me along to forums, which sparked my interest. When I attended our local community college, my professors James Newtson and Kelley Tagarino fueled my interest by taking us out to do field work, hands on projects, and ultimately, it's seeing their passion for ocean exploration and conservation that kept me on board.
 

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

I find my students' expression fascinating when they learn something new. Seeing their face light up, their curiosity peak when we talk about a favorite topic of theirs, such as earthquakes and formation of volcanoes, make my job worth it.
 

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

I applied for SCF after my twin sister came back from her 2023 expedition.
 

What other jobs led you to your current career?

On my academic journey, I've met plenty of individuals, other students and professors, that helped keep my drive to pursue my career. Intimidation and doubts gnawed at me many time. Following my professors footsteps, I wanted to help students just like me. If I had quit, I wouldn't have opportunities, such as OET, be available to me.

Bachelor of Arts in Communications, focus in Marine Science - University of Hawai'i at Hilo
 

What are your hobbies?

I love being outside: going on drives around the island, road trips (when I travel) and going to the beach, snorkeling, camping. Also, I love writing and reading. Also, spontaneous (within reason).
 

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

If you want to try new things, you must be open to experiences you never thought you'd try or pursue!
