Lauren Hudson
Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?
I am a teacher with a passion for science education. I completed a Bachelor's degree in Science and then a Bachelor's degree in Education at the University of Victoria. After teaching all grades at an independent school for 12 years, I joined Ocean Networks Canada's Learning and Community Engagement department as a K-12 Education Coordinator in the summer of 2019. I completed a Master in Education from the University of Calgary focussing on how guest speakers contribute to classroom learning. In my current role, I design educational resources, contribute to educational and scientific conferences, and facilitate both classroom and event-style engagements. I am so fortunate to educate others but also learn about the diverse and exciting work that ONC engages in.
What sparked your interest in your career?
I am curious by nature. I have always been captivated by the natural world, and this lead me to study sciences right after high school. I taught summer science camp during my undergraduate studies and decided to become a teacher. I had the opportunity to work with Ocean Networks Canada while I was teaching so I was excited when a job became available. I believe that we have so much to learn about our incredible oceans and that exploring and connecting with the ocean are foundational experiences that will drive us to take care of our planet. I enjoy kayaking and any other activity that gets me outside, from teaching a class outside to cycling and hiking in my spare time.
Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?
I've had many sources of encouragement, from my parents to teachers to friends and family. Nature has always had a huge impact on me. I am constantly amazed at the diversity and interconnectedness of everything!
What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?
I am grateful when I get to meet with community members and learn about the local environment from their perspective. Recently, I learned about tsunamis from people with personal experience and Indigenous oral histories.
How did you get involved with the Ocean Exploration Trust?
I expressed my interest in joining any upcoming expedition, and I'm delighted that I get to participate with OET!
What other jobs led you to your current career?
Working in various fields all connected to nature!
What are your degrees and certifications?
Bachelor of Science - University of Victoria 2004; Bachelor of Education - University of Victoria 2007; Master of Education - University of Calgary 2022
What are your hobbies?
