Kaitlyn Lowen
Tell us about your work / research. What kinds of things do you do?
I am currently a 7th and 8th grade middle school science teacher. At these grade levels, we study a variety of science topics that range from anatomy and physiology to chemistry and geology. We are currently implementing a strong STEM curriculum and influence on our campus to inspire our students to pursue further knowledge and higher education in STEM fields. I am also the girl's basketball and volleyball coach on campus. I enjoy inspiring our kids in the classroom and in after-school programs.
What sparked your initial interest in your career?
I began my career with Child Protective Services. I truly enjoyed working with families and our community. However, through this experience, I learned that I wanted to spend more time with children on a daily basis. Through teaching, I have been able to truly make a difference in children's lives on a daily basis.
Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?
My parents and husband have been my number one supporters. My parents raised me to never stop dreaming; they believed I could go to the bottom of the ocean if I set my mind to it! Their confidence in me has given me the courage to try new things and continue to try and grow as a person and an educator. My husband has always supported me in all my endeavors and will always inspire me to aim higher.
What element of your work / study do you think is the most fascinating?
I truly enjoy getting our kids excited. Whether that is by integrating Chromebooks in the classroom for the first time or hosting a Community STEM Night with underwater robots and hands-on learning. It is truly amazing when you can set a child's imagination on fire.
What other jobs led you to your current career?
I always knew that enjoyed working with people. I started in Child Protective Services and truly enjoyed working with children. It was an easy transition from CPS to being a teacher.
What are your degrees and certifications?
Associates of Science- Otero Junior College 2011; Bachelors of Art in Psychology, Minor in Criminology 2013
What are your hobbies?
I am an ex-college basketball player. I enjoy all kinds of physical activity such as running, hiking, shooting hoops, and surfing in the Gulf of Mexico.
What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?
Never stop dreaming! There is a whole world out there that is waiting for someone to discover it, write about it, film it, photograph it; be the one that does it!
How did you get involved with the Nautilus Exploration Program? How did you get on the ship?
Last year, I was privileged to have been selected as a Nautilus Ambassador representing Corpus Christi for the CITGO Community STEM Program. That experience took hold not only in me but on my campus and in my community. I could not wait to get the chance to sail on the Nautilus again!
