Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

I am a PhD student at URI GSO that works with bathymetry, physical samples (volcanic glass), and imagery data to better characterize and understand submarine eruptions. I use Qimera and MB-systems frequently to process bathymetry data, and mounted volcanic glass samples that were eventually analyzed using imagery data gathered from a scanning electron microscope (SEM).

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

I was enamored with geologic research during my time in college at Western Washington University (WWU), and wanted to continue to pursue my interests in graduate school at URI GSO.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My previous mentor at WWU, and my Dad, encouraged me to pursue my research interests in geology at the graduate level.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

I find that analyzing, and collecting data from cruises is the most interesting part of my work.

How did you get involved with the Ocean Exploration Trust?

I got involved in the Nautilus Exploration Program via my graduate school advisor, Adam Soule.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

My time as a research assistant, undergraduate TA, and ski instructor showed me how much I enjoy teaching and investigating complex datasets.

What are your degrees and certifications?

I am a PSIA Level One ski instructor, and have a Bachelor's in Science in Marine and Coastal Sciences (MACS) from WWU.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy fly fishing, reading, board games, and running!

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Continue to pursue your interests throughout college, or in other careers, and see where they lead you!
