Hulu Nunokawa
Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?
As a crew member at Kānehūnāmoku Voyaging Academy, I help educate learners of a wide range of different ages anywhere from Kindergarten to Kupuna (Elders) and groups from Waiahole Elementary (our neighboring valley) to film crews from New Zealand in traditional Hawaiian navigational techniques and good seamanship skills.
What sparked your initial interest in your career?
I was fortunate enough to fulfill a lifelong goal of learning voyaging when I applied for the Kupaa Mau Program (now Hoa Mau program) at Kānehūnāmoku Voyaging Academy (KVA) in Kaneohe, Oahu. The first day out on the water was life-changing for me. I'd never felt so at peace and engaged in something so naturally. My life changed after that day. I was lucky enough to be hired as Crew and feel blessed every day out on the water.
Who influenced you or influenced you the most?
I'm lucky enough to have a large support network who believe, nurture, and encourage me. However, I'd be remiss to not mention my mother who has gone out of her way to help me on my journey to grow as a voyager and mariner.
What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?
The ability to remove yourself from the hustle and bustle and anxiety of the modern world to focus on what's in front of you. To see and predict the change in the weather through observing the clouds and the wildlife around you. The overall ability to feel connected to the rhythm of the natural world.
How did you get involved with the Ocean Exploration Trust?
I was searching for jobs involving sea time and was encouraged to apply by my Captain who had previously been a Science Communication Fellow and had an excellent experience. A mixture of education, STEAM, and sea-time it seemed like the perfect opportunity and I feel very blessed to have been selected.
What other jobs led you to your current career?
I've been working since elementary school mainly doing landscaping and construction through high school. I also occasionally worked as a caterer for my grandparent's traditional Hawaiian food company when visiting them on Kaua'i. While still in college I started working on Film sets in different production offices such as Hawaii Five-O and various documentaries. I continued this after graduating from school and gaining some filming experience as a production assistant on Disney's Doogie Kamealoha. On the side I also freelance design for Late Night, a clothing company in Las Vegas as well as work on digital art pieces. As a writer, I also occasionally help with writing scripts, a poetry book that I'm slowly putting together, as well as songs for friends. More than anything I like to stay busy.
What are your degrees and certifications?
I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production with an emphasis is Directing from Dodge College at Chapman University 20222; Red Cross First Aid and CPR certified, Lifeguard Certified, PVS Rescue Swimmer Certified
What are your hobbies?
I am an avid artist, writer, and photographer/videographer, but also really enjoy reading and having a nice day at the beach with my family.
What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?
Get comfortable being uncomfortable. No matter how well you prepare something will surprise you every day. There's usually no point griping or complaining about it though. It's better to practice your skills to the point where you feel comfortable in your abilities no matter what is going on. Many great qualities are only realized once they have been tested and this is especially the case when sailing. As my Captain says, " Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors."
