Cory Padilla
Cory Padilla is Ph.D student at Georgia Institute of Technology in the laboratory of Dr. Frank Stewart. His work focuses on the genomic and metabolic diversity of bacteria that live in oceanic oxygen minimum zones (OMZs). Prior to working at GT, he was a geochemist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, a biogeochemical specialist at University of Hawaii at Manoa, and a lab technician at University of California at Santa Cruz in marine microbial ecology. Cory has accumulated a lot time sea-time for his research at places including: Hawaiian Ocean Time-series (HOT), Monterey Bay, Gulf of Mexico, and the Eastern Tropical North Pacific (ETNP) OMZ.
Cory Padilla graduated from University of California at Santa Cruz in 2011 with a B.S in marine biology, as is currently finishing up his second year in the Ph.D. Biology program at Georgia Institute of Technology.
"I have always wanted to be a part of an ROV team, all the work I have done in the past has been focused in the top 500 meters of the ocean, I thought it would be really unique to sample in areas that only ROVs could get to. So when I was offered a spot to go I couldn't wait to sign up!"
