Tell us about your work/research. What kinds of things do you do?

As research assistant working at the Hatfield Marine Science Centre (through Oregon State University) I co-manages the Helium Isotope Lab, based at Hatfield, which involves daily running of the group’s Mass Spectrometer and various gas extraction lines and processing seawater and gas samples for analysis both at sea and in the lab.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

Working with noble gases and the different ways in which we can analyze them using mass spectrometry.

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My Geography teacher in school, who made geology so interesting, and my parents who always encouraged my inquisitive mind.

What element of your work/study do you think is the most fascinating?

I enjoy collecting samples, preparing them and analyzing them back in the lab. I like to be able to be involved in the whole process from start to finish.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

My background is in isotope geochemistry. I gained a Ph.D. in the UK (2013), in argon-argon (Ar-Ar) geochronology, which is used to study the age of various geological events. I completed a 3-year post-doctoral position at the Geological Survey of Norway, co-managing their Ar-Ar facility before moving to the USA.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Ph.D. - The Open University, UK

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy being out in nature and being creative.

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Work hard in school and know that many careers have multiple ways in, so do not become disheartened if an academic route is not possible if you have a passion for something it is worth pursuing.
